Cowichan Valley Capitals forward Brock Cummings, Surrey Eagles goaltender Ajeet Gundarah and Victoria Grizzlies forward Anthony Carone have been named the NAPA Auto Parts 3 Stars of the Week.
1st Star – Brock Cummings (F) – Cowichan Valley Capitals
Cummings led all players with four goals in two games last week, including his first career hat trick in the BCHL.
He notched his three-goal milestone in a Friday night contest against the Chilliwack Chiefs, which the Capitals won 5-3. With his team up 2-1 in the third period, he buried a power-play marker to extend the lead to two goals. After Chilliwack battled back to tie it, the 18-year-old scored the game-winner with 7:33 to play in the frame, then sealed the affair with an empty-net tally with three seconds on the clock. He was named first star of the game.
Cummings was right back on the score sheet the following night, this time scoring the Capitals fifth goal of the game late in the second period in an eventual 6-5 victory over the Powell River Kings.
The Mississauga, Ont. native is tied for the team lead with 12 goals on the year, while his 21 points in 30 games put him in third among Caps players.
2nd Star – Ajeet Gundarah (G) – Surrey Eagles
Gundarah continued his impressive season by winning both of his starts over the weekend, stopping 56 of the 58 shots he faced to post a .966 save percentage and a 1.00 goals-against average.
On Friday night, the Richmond, B.C. product made 26 saves on 27 shots to earn his fifth straight victory, a 3-1 win over the Langley Rivermen. He got the nod once again on Sunday afternoon against the Coquitlam Express and this time swatted aside 30 of 31 shots on goal to extend his win streak to six in a 4-1 triumph. He was named first star of the game.
Gundarah improved his save percentage to a league-best .938 and lowered his goals-against average to 1.91, also the best mark in the BCHL.
3rd Star – Anthony Carone (F) – Victoria Grizzlies
Carone tied for the league lead in points last with with five in two games after notching a pair of goals and a trio of assists in two Grizzlies wins.
The College of the Holy Cross commit had his fourth multi-point outing of the season on Friday night, finishing with a goal and an assist in a 7-1 win against the Powell River Kings. After a scoreless first period, Carone capped off a four-goal middle frame with his sixth of the season to give the Grizzlies a 4-1 advantage at intermission, then registered an assist in the third period.
On Saturday, the 20-year-old had a career-best tying three-point night, contributing a goal and two helpers in Victoria’s 4-2 win over the Chilliwack Chiefs. With the Grizzlies down 1-0 in the second period, Carone assisted on the tying goal, then scored the go-ahead marker to make it 2-1 at the break. He finished off his night by assisting on the eventual game-winner 5:42 into the third.
In his second BCHL season, the Pittsburgh, Penn. product is second on his team with 31 points in 31 games, just two off the lead, and his 24 assists are most among Grizzlies players.
